Native (mainly southern England) medium-sized deciduous tree with year-round interest: silvery-white young leaves and undersides, creamy-white spring flowers, red/orange autumn berries loved by birds, and good autumn colour.

Excellent for wildlife (pollinators, moths, birds). Tolerant of chalk/limestone, pollution, wind, salt/coastal exposure, and urban conditions. Low-maintenance once established; suitable for specimen, street, park, or woodland planting.

Key planting points

• Size: Typically 8–12 m high × 4–8 m spread (can reach ~15–20 m in ideal conditions); slow-growing; best for medium–large gardens or open spaces.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade; exposed or sheltered positions accepted.
• Soil: Prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil; thrives on chalk/limestone and alkaline conditions; tolerates clay, loam, sand, and neutral/acid soils; avoid waterlogged or boggy ground.
• When to plant: Bare-root November–March -any time if soil is not frozen or waterlogged.
• How to plant: Dig a hole twice the root width, plant at same level as in the nursery; firm soil gently; water thoroughly; stake for 1–2 years if needed; mulch around base (keep clear of trunk).
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first 1–2 growing seasons during dry spells; keep a weed-free circle around the base; once established, largely drought-tolerant and requires little pruning (remove dead/damaged wood only).
