White Poplar (populus alba)

• Fast-growing, naturalised deciduous tree (up to 20–25m tall) with striking silvery-white Down Under the leaves, creating a shimmering effect in breezy weather; young shoots and bark also white.
• Highly tolerant of exposed coastal sites, salt spray, wind, pollution, and most soils (including chalk, clay, wet areas); excellent for windbreaks or screens.
• Ornamental appeal: lobed leaves turn yellow in autumn; early catkins provide pollen/nectar for pollinators.
• Supports wildlife: hosts butterflies/moths, can form dense thickets from sucker growth.
• Low-maintenance once established; suitable for large-scale planting or boundaries.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; any moist soil except constantly waterlogged; vast open space required (spreads widely) – avoid within 40m of buildings due to invasive roots/suckers; ideal for coastal/exposed sites.
• Preparation: Dig large hole twice root width; add organic matter to poor soils; remove weeds.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weed growth and conserve soil moisture.
• Aftercare: Water well first few years in dry spells; remove suckers if unwanted (mow/strim); minimal pruning (late summer to avoid bleeding); highly vigorous but can become invasive without management.
