Deciduous shrub with deep ruby-red, funnel-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer (often with some later blooms). Attractive mid- to dark-green foliage, fully hardy, easy and reliable, good for bees, and useful in borders, informal hedges or mixed plantings. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Key planting points
- Size: 1.5–2.5 m tall and wide (bushy/upright habit).
- Position: Full sun to partial shade (best flowering in sun); tolerates most aspects and exposed or sheltered sites.
- Soil: Any fertile, moist but well-drained soil (chalk, clay, loam or sand; acid to alkaline). Avoid waterlogging.
- When to plant: Late autumn or spring.
- How to plant: Dig a hole twice the width of the root. Improve soil with well-rotted compost. Plant at the same depth as previously grown, firm in, and water thoroughly. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Space ~1.5–2 m apart (closer for hedging).
- Aftercare: Water regularly in the first year, especially during dry spells. Once established it is low-maintenance and reasonably drought-tolerant. Feed with a balanced fertiliser or mulch in spring. Prune after flowering (cut back flowered shoots and remove some older stems at the base) to keep it compact and encourage blooms.
