• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant to -20°C or lower; highly adaptable to British climates, including coastal and exposed sites.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade; tolerates exposed, windy, or sheltered positions; suitable for urban areas due to pollution and wind resistance; allow ample space as it grows large (up to 30m+).
• Soil: Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained soil; highly tolerant of chalk, clay, loam, sand, poor, or heavy soils; avoids permanently waterlogged conditions.
• Planting time: Bare-root November to March (dormant season); container-grown ideally autumn or spring.
• Planting method: Dig a wide hole twice root spread; incorporate organic matter if soil is poor; plant at same depth (soil mark on stem); stake young trees if necssary; mulch base and water thoroughly.
• Watering: Water regularly in first 1–2 years during dry periods; once established, highly tolerant of drought and wet conditions.
• Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning needed; no regular feeding; note: prolific self-seeding can make it weedy in some areas—consider site carefully to avoid unwanted spread.
• Honeydew: Large numbers of aphids are often found underneath Sycamore leaves and these secrete a stick substance known as honeydew which can fall down and stick to Cars parked underneath
