• Distinctive low-spreading habit (typically 0.5–1 m high × 1–1.5 m wide) with attractive herringbone branching.
• Small glossy dark-green leaves that turn orange-red in autumn.
• Pink-tinged white flowers in late spring (good for bees) followed by bright red berries lasting into winter (food for birds).
• Extremely tough and low-maintenance: tolerates most soils (except waterlogged), full sun to partial shade, exposed/coastal/urban sites, and drought once established. Ideal for ground cover, banks, slopes or training against low walls

Planting advice

• Timing: Dormant season only – ideally November to early March. Avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.
• On arrival: Keep moist and plant promptly (or heel in temporarily).
• Site & soil: Well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. remove weeds; add grit on heavy clay (lean soil encourages compact growth). 
• Planting: Dig a hole roughly twice the width of the root system and deep enough so the soil mark on the stem sits level with the surrounding ground. Spread roots out, backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly. 
• Spacing: 1–1.5 m apart for ground cover.
• Aftercare: Mulch (keep clear of stems). Water regularly in the first growing season; thereafter largely drought-tolerant and needs little maintenance.
• Legal note
  Listed on Schedule 9 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act (invasive non-native in England & Wales). Legal to grow in gardens but an offence to plant or allow it to spread into the wild.
