Deciduous conifer showing strong hybrid vigour – grows faster and with better stem form than either parent (European or Japanese larch). Attractive seasonal needle colour (fresh green in spring, golden in autumn). Produces strong, durable timber suitable for construction, fencing, cladding and outdoor use. Good pioneer species that tolerates a wider range of sites than pure European larch.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun (very shade-intolerant)
• Well-drained mineral soils of poor to moderate fertility; also performs on well-drained peats
• Prefer 700–1,500 mm annual rainfall
• Cold hardy and tolerates moderate exposure; susceptible to late spring frosts
• Avoid waterlogged or very dry sites

When to plant

• Bare-root: dormant season, ideally late autumn to early spring, and completed before flushing begins

How to plant

• Plant at approximately 2 × 2 m (2,500 stems/ha) for timber production
• Dig a hole large enough for the roots; plant at the same depth as in the nursery, firm well and water if needed
  
• Give more space for amenity or specimen trees (mature height typically 25–40 m)

Aftercare

• Thorough weed control is essential during establishment
• Water in dry spells in the first 1–2 years
• Thin regularly (starting early) to maintain crown density and timber quality
