Elegant large evergreen conifer with a distinctive drooping leading shoot and gracefully pendulous branch tips when young, later developing a broad crown. Soft blue-green (slightly glaucous) needles and attractive upright cones. Excellent architectural specimen tree for parks, large gardens or avenues; creates an air of maturity relatively quickly.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun
• Any well-drained soil (chalk, clay, loam or sand); tolerates a wide pH range (acid to alkaline)
• Avoid waterlogged ground
• Hardy; young plants can be sensitive to late spring frosts and cold winds – prefer a sheltered site initially 
• Needs ample space (mature height often 20–30 m+ in the UK with a wide spread)

When to plant

• Best in autumn or early spring when the soil is workable (not frozen or waterlogged)
• Container-grown trees can be planted at most times of year with care

How to plant

• Dig a hole 2–3 times wider than the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly
• Mulch around the base (keep clear of the trunk)
• Stake young trees in exposed positions if needed
• Allow plenty of room for eventual size

Aftercare

• Water regularly for the first few years until established; thereafter moderately drought-tolerant
• No regular pruning required (remove only dead or damaged growth)
• Protect young plants from severe frost and cold winds if necessary

Best suited to larger gardens, parks and estates where its graceful form can develop fully; less ideal for small or very exposed sites.
