• Native deciduous tree/shrub, extremely hardy and tolerant of most soils (including clay, chalk, poor), exposed sites, wind, coastal conditions, and pollution.
• Iconic for dense, thorny hedging: stock-proof, intruder-deterrent, and ideal for boundaries or windbreaks.
• Outstanding for wildlife: supports over 150 insect species; spring flowers attract pollinators; red haws feed birds in autumn/winter; dense thorns provide safe nesting sites.
• Beautiful seasonal interest: fragrant white blossom in May, glossy lobed leaves turning yellow in autumn, persistent red berries.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown anytime, ideally autumn/spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; moist but well-drained soil (tolerates wet/exposed sites); ample space for mature size (up to 15m tall as tree).
• Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; add organic matter to poor soils; protect young plants from rabbits/deer.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on stem); firm in, water thoroughly, mulch base (keep clear of trunk); stake trees if needed.
• Aftercare: Water well first few years in dry spells; trim hedges in winter (preferably after berries eaten); minimal care required; trim annually for dense hedge.
