Green Beech (fagus sylvatica)

• Native deciduous tree, majestic and long-lived (up to 300+ years), growing to 30–40m with a broad, domed crown.
• Stunning seasonal display: fresh green spring leaves, deep green summer foliage, golden-copper autumn colour retained through the winter on small trees and hedges.
• Excellent for formal hedging – dense, stock-proof, and responds well to clipping; also superb as specimen trees or in woodland planting.
• Supports wildlife: beech mast (nuts) feeds birds, mice and squirrels; dense canopy provides nesting sites; leaves support moth caterpillars.
• Tolerant of most well-drained soils (including chalk); wind-resistant once established; retains an elegant presence year-round.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; deep, fertile, well-drained soil (dislikes heavy clay or waterlogged sites); ample space required – not suitable for small gardens unless constantly trimmed.
• Preparation: Dig a large hole twice the root ball width; incorporate organic matter in poor or shallow soils.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check soil mark on trunk); stake young trees in exposed sites; firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk).
• Aftercare: Water regularly first few years during dry spells; minimal pruning (winter for trees, summer/autumn for hedges); protect from rabbits/deer; low-maintenance once established.
