Graceful deciduous shrub (or small tree) with arching dark branches, fine feathery green foliage, and clouds of light pink flowers in late spring (May–June). Reaches 2.5–4 m height and spread.

RHS Award of Garden Merit. Highly valued for salt- and wind-tolerance (excellent coastal plant), drought-tolerance once established, low maintenance, suitability for poor soils, and attraction to bees and pollinators. Generally pest-free and hardy to about –15 °C.

Key planting points

• Timing: Bare-root plants from November–March. 
• Position: Full sun; tolerates exposed sites and coastal conditions. Inland, provide shelter from cold drying winds.
• Soil: Well-drained (sandy, loam or clay); acid to neutral preferred. Dislikes shallow chalky or waterlogged ground. Tolerates poor soils.
• How to plant: Dig a hole slightly larger than the rootball (improve heavy soil with grit/sand for drainage). Plant at the same depth as previously grown, firm in, water thoroughly, and mulch. Space 1.5–2 m apart for hedging or more for specimens.
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first growing season to establish; thereafter largely drought-tolerant. Prune immediately after flowering (cut back flowered shoots) to encourage strong growth and keep shape. Minimal feeding needed.
