• Large, handsome deciduous tree (typically 20–30 m+ tall) with dark green leaves that have striking silvery-white undersides, creating a shimmering effect in the breeze.
• Produces clusters of highly fragrant creamy-white flowers in mid-summer.
• Excellent urban tolerance (pollution, soil compaction, heat and moderate drought) and usually largely free of aphids/honeydew.
• Fully hardy across most of the UK; architectural form suited to parks, large gardens, avenues and street planting.

Planting & Growing

• Site: Full sun or partial shade; sheltered from cold/drying winds. Needs space – not for small gardens.
• Soil: Moist but well-drained; tolerates chalk, clay, loam or sand; prefers neutral to alkaline pH. Avoid waterlogged or very dry sites.
• When to plant: Anytime through the winter when the ground is workable.
• Method: Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root; plant at the same depth as in the nursery; firm well, water thoroughly and stake young trees. 
• Aftercare: Water regularly for the first 2–3 years until established; mulch to conserve moisture; minimal pruning needed (remove dead/damaged wood). Once mature it is low-maintenance.

Ideal for large open spaces where its size and ornamental qualities can be fully appreciated.
