  • Fast-growing deciduous tree with strongly twisted, contorted branches and twigs that create striking winter structure and architectural interest.
  • Narrow twisted leaves and yellowish catkins in spring; excellent for cut stems in floral arrangements.
  • Hardy, tolerant of a range of soils (prefers moist), and useful as a specimen or multi-stem form.
Planting Advice
  • Timing: Plant while dormant, November–March, when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
  • Site: Full sun; moist but well-drained soil (tolerates damp sites). Avoid planting near buildings, foundations, drains or paths due to vigorous roots. Allow space for eventual height (often 6–12 m+) and spread (4–8 m).
  • Preparation: Keep roots moist before planting. Clear weeds/grass around the planting site.
  • Planting: Dig a hole no deeper than the roots but at least twice (ideally up to 3×) as wide. Spread roots outwards. Position so the root collar/flare is level with the surrounding soil surface. Backfill with the excavated soil (optionally mixed with some organic matter), firm gently, and water thoroughly.
  • Support & aftercare: Stake if the tree is tall or in an exposed spot. Mulch (keeping clear of the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water regularly in the first 1–2 years during dry spells, especially in spring/summer. Keep the base weed-free while establishing.
