Native European red raspberry producing juicy, sweet edible fruits (high in fibre, vitamin C and antioxidants). Attracts pollinators and wildlife; suitable for wildlife or edible gardens. Hardy, relatively easy once established, and productive. Spreads by suckers (manage to prevent invasiveness).

Key planting points

• When: Bare-root canes best planted while dormant, November–March (soil not frozen or waterlogged). Late autumn ideal for root establishment.
• Site: Full sun preferred (tolerates light shade with reduced yield).
• Soil: Fertile, well-drained, moisture-retentive, slightly acidic to neutral (pH ideally 6–6.7). Avoid waterlogging, shallow chalky or very heavy clay soils. Improve poor soil with organic matter (garden compost or well-rotted manure). Do not plant where raspberries or other Rubus species have grown recently.
• Plant so uppermost roots are no more than about 5 cm below the surface (use the nursery soil mark as a guide). Spread roots, firm gently, water in. On heavy soil, plant on a slight ridge or raised bed.
• After planting: Mulch with organic matter (keep clear of stems). Water in dry spells while establishing. Cut canes back after planting to encourage strong new growth.
