White Rugosa Rose (rosa rugosa alba)

• Extremely hardy, tough, and disease-resistant shrub rose, thriving in poor soils, coastal conditions, and cold UK climates.
• Fragrant repeat-flowering white blooms (summer to autumn), followed by large, ornamental scarlet hips rich in vitamin C (edible for syrups/jams).
• Excellent for dense, prickly hedging (impenetrable barrier), wildlife gardens (attracts bees, butterflies, birds with nectar, shelter, and hips), and low-maintenance landscaping.

Planting and Care

• Best time to plant: Late autumn to early spring (November–March), ideally bare-root in dormant season for establishment.
• Site: Full sun preferred (tolerates partial shade); most soils, including sandy/clay, but best in fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained.
• Planting: Dig hole twice root width; space 30–60cm for hedges, wider for shrubs; mulch after planting.
• Ongoing care: Minimal pruning (light in late summer or remove old stems in winter); mulch annually with organic matter; feed with rose fertiliser in spring/summer for best flowering.
