White Fir (abies concolor)

• Attractive evergreen conifer with soft, silvery blue-green needles and a neat conical/columnar form.
• Excellent year-round structure, winter interest, and specimen or screening value.
• Fully hardy, low-maintenance once established, and useful for wildlife (birds, etc.). 
• Good needle retention and pleasant scent if used as a Christmas tree; timber is light and workable where grown for that purpose.

• Hardiness & site: Fully hardy across the UK. Prefers full sun to light partial shade and a sheltered position (protect young trees from cold, drying winds). Performs best in cooler, moister areas (e.g. north & west); may be thinner-crowned in hotter, drier south-east.
• Soil: Deep, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic. Tolerates clay, loam or sand if drainage is good; avoid waterlogging. Improve heavy soils with organic matter and grit.
• When to plant: Autumn to early spring (ideally October–April) while dormant, provided ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
• How to plant: Dig a hole twice the width of the root and the same depth. Place level with the soil surface. Backfill, firm gently, water thoroughly, and mulch. Space at least 4–5 m (or more for specimens) to allow full development.
• Aftercare: Keep well watered for the first 1–2 years, especially in dry spells. Once established it is relatively drought-tolerant. No regular pruning needed (remove only dead/damaged wood). Watch for adelgids, aphids or honey fungus.
• Size: Can exceed 12 m tall (often 20–40 m in ideal conditions) with 4–8 m spread over decades.
