Evergreen conifer with dense, aromatic, scale-like foliage in flat sprays. Excellent for formal hedging, screening, windbreaks or as a specimen. Fully hardy, low-maintenance once established, and provides year-round structure and privacy.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun to partial shade (best density and colour in full sun)
• Moist but well-drained soil; tolerates a wide range (chalk, clay, loam, sand) and most pH levels
• Fully hardy across the UK 
• Protect young plants from drying winds; tolerates some exposure once established
• Species can reach 10–15 m+

When to plant

• Best in late autumn or spring when soil is workable 
  
• Bare-root from November–March

How to plant

• Dig a hole (or trench for hedging) twice as wide as the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly
• Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds (keep clear of the stem)
• For hedging, space 50–80 cm apart depending on desired density

Aftercare

• Water regularly for the first 1–2 years until established
• Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring if growth is slow
• Trim hedges annually (spring or late summer) to maintain shape; remove dead/damaged growth as needed

Ideal for formal hedges, privacy screens or architectural accents in most UK gardens.
