Turkish Hazel (corylus colurna)

• Large, pyramidal deciduous tree (up to 20-25m tall) with attractive corky bark and symmetrical form; RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
• Highly tolerant of urban conditions: pollution, paving, exposure, drought, and a wide range of soils including chalk and clay.
• Produces long yellow catkins in early spring (nectar for pollinators) and edible hazelnuts in fringed husks (though smaller and thicker-shelled than common hazel).
• Excellent street or avenue tree; provides dense shade and golden-yellow autumn colour.
• Deep-rooting, non-suckering, wind-resistant, and low-maintenance once established; supports wildlife.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; moist but well-drained soil (tolerates most types, including poor/chalky/clay); ample space required – unsuitable for small gardens.
• Preparation: Dig a large hole twice the root ball width; add organic matter to very poor soils.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk).
• Aftercare: Water well first few years, especially in dry spells; minimal pruning required; generally pest/disease-resistant but watch for squirrels raiding nuts.
