• Large, long-lived deciduous tree (up to 20–35 m) with attractive glossy leaves, summer catkins, and rugged bark.
• Produces edible nuts (roastable, flour, traditional Christmas use); valuable durable timber and excellent for coppicing (fencing, poles).
• Supports wildlife (nectar for bees/insects, nuts for squirrels, foodplant for moths); drought-tolerant once established and suitable for large gardens, parks, woodlands or nut production in milder southern/midland areas.

Planting Advice

• Timing: Late autumn to early spring (typically November–March) while fully dormant; avoid frozen or waterlogged ground.
• Site: Full sun preferred (tolerates partial shade); well-drained, moist but not wet soil; best on acid to neutral (pH ~4.5–7, ideally 5–6.5), sandy/loamy soils. Avoid heavy compacted clay or strongly alkaline/chalky ground.
• Space: Allow 8–12 m between trees for nut production or large specimens (closer for woodland/coppice).
• Preparation: Dig a square hole wide enough for roots to spread freely.
• Planting: Spread roots out naturally; plant at the same depth as previously grown. Backfill with the excavated soil, firm gently to eliminate air pockets, water thoroughly, and apply a 5–10 cm mulch (compost/woodchip) keeping it clear of the trunk. 
• Support & protection: Stake larger plants if exposed; protect from rabbits/deer with guards.
• Aftercare: Keep weed-free and water during dry spells in the first 1–2 growing seasons. Minimal pruning needed (remove damaged/crossing branches in winter).
