Compact, easy-care deciduous shrub (typically 0.8–1.5 m height and spread) with bronze-red young foliage maturing to bluish-green (sometimes lightly variegated), and masses of deep pink to carmine-red flower clusters from mid- to late summer.

Attracts pollinators, good for mixed borders, informal hedging, wildlife and coastal gardens; generally pest- and disease-free, low-maintenance and fully hardy across the UK.

Planting summary (UK)

• When: Best November–March, avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground. 
• Site: Full sun preferred for best flowers and foliage colour; tolerates partial shade. Exposed or sheltered positions.
• Soil: Most types (chalk, clay, loam, sand); moist but well-drained, moderately fertile; any pH. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
• How: Dig hole twice the width of the root; plant at original soil level; backfill with soil + compost/manure; firm and water thoroughly. Space 60–100 cm apart (closer for hedging). Mulch after planting. 
• Aftercare: Water regularly in first season (then only in prolonged drought). Feed balanced fertiliser in early spring. Prune hard in late winter/early spring (to 15–30 cm) for best flowering and shape; deadhead spent blooms for possible second flush.

Very reliable once established.
