• Compact multi-season small tree/large shrub (typically 4–8 m high × 3–6 m spread) with RHS Award of Garden Merit.
• Masses of white spring blossom (often with bronze young leaves), edible purple-black berries in summer (popular with birds), and brilliant orange-red autumn colour.
• Hardy, low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly, suitable for sun/part shade, most soils (prefers moist, well-drained, acid–neutral), and small gardens, hedges or specimen planting.

Planting advice

• Choose a mild day when soil is workable (not frozen or waterlogged).
• Keep roots moist before planting.
• Site: full sun (best autumn colour and flowering) to partial shade; moist but well-drained soil (improve heavy clay or very sandy soil with organic matter).
• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root spread and no deeper than the roots; plant so the root collar/soil mark is level with the surrounding ground.
• Spread roots outwards, backfill with original soil (optionally mixed with compost), firm gently to remove air pockets.
• Water thoroughly, mulch (keep clear of the stem), and stake if needed in exposed sites.
• Water regularly in the first 1–2 years, especially during dry spells.
