Shrubby Cinquefoil 'Red Ace' (potentilla fruticosa 'Red Ace')

Compact, bushy deciduous shrub (typically 0.5–1 m height and spread) with dark green pinnate leaves and bright vermilion-red flowers (yellow-backed, fading to orange in hot sun) from summer into autumn.
Fully hardy, long-flowering, low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, bee-friendly, and suitable for borders, low hedging, containers, coastal or gravel gardens.
Planting advice

Plant while dormant, ideally November–March, when the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
- Choose a site in full sun (or light partial shade) with well-drained soil (chalk, loam or sand; any pH). Improve heavy clay with grit if needed.
- Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably; plant at the same depth as the previous soil mark on the stem.
- Backfill, firm gently, and water thoroughly. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds (keep mulch clear of the stem).
- Water regularly in the first growing season until established; thereafter it needs little watering except in prolonged drought.
- Minimal pruning needed: in late winter/early spring, remove dead or damaged stems and lightly cut back flowered growth if desired to keep it compact.
