Late-flowering deciduous shrub (typically July/August–autumn) with large, showy trumpet-shaped blooms in pink, white, blue, purple or red. Provides colour when many other shrubs have finished. Attractive lobed foliage, low-maintenance once established, drought-tolerant, suitable for borders, informal hedges/screens, city and coastal gardens, and attracts pollinators. Hardy across most of the UK when established.

Planting advice

• Position: Full sun in a sheltered spot (ideally south- or west-facing); protect from cold/drying winds.
• Soil: Moist but free-draining; tolerates chalk, clay, loam or sand (pH neutral to slightly acid/alkaline). Improve heavy clay with grit or sharp sand for drainage. Avoid waterlogged sites.
• When: Best in spring.
• How: Dig a hole twice the width of the root and the same depth. Plant at the same level as in the nursery. Backfill, firm gently, water thoroughly, and mulch (keep mulch clear of the stem). 
• Spacing/size: Allow 1.5–3 m depending on variety (mature height/spread typically 2.5–4 m).
• Young plants: Water regularly until established; provide winter mulch or protection for the first 1–2 years in colder/exposed sites.

Once established it is generally easy-care with minimal pruning (light tidy in late spring or after flowering).
