• Hardiness: Hardy in most of the UK, tolerant to at least -15°C; protect young plants from severe frost or cold winds to avoid leaf scorch.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade for optimal growth and vivid autumn colour; prefers sheltered positions; ideal as a specimen tree with space to mature (15–25m tall and wide).
• Soil: Prefers fertile, moist but well-drained, neutral to acid soil; tolerates clay, loam, sand, or chalk but best autumn colour on acid soils; avoids dry, highly alkaline, or waterlogged conditions.
• Planting time: Container-grown any time (best autumn or spring); bare-root November to March (dormant season).
• Planting method: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root spread; incorporate organic matter for poor soils; plant at the same depth as was grown in the nursery (soil mark on stem); stake young trees if needed; mulch base and water thoroughly.
• Watering: Water regularly in the first 1–2 years to keep soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods; once established, moderately drought-tolerant.
• Maintenance: Low; minimal pruning; no regular feeding needed; monitor for aphids.
