• Bushy deciduous shrub (to 2.5–4 m) with year-round interest: grey-green leaves edged creamy-white (sometimes pink-tinged), creamy-white flowers in late spring/early summer, white berries, and vivid red stems that shine in winter.
• Tough, fully hardy, tolerant of wet/clay soils, and excellent for winter borders, wildlife gardens, informal hedges or grouping for impact. Attracts bees and birds.

Planting Guide

• Best time: bare-root Nov–March. 
• Position: Full sun for brightest stem colour and best variegation; tolerates partial shade. Any aspect; exposed or sheltered.
• Soil: Most types (clay, loam, sand); moist but well-drained preferred, though it copes with damper/heavier ground. Acid to neutral pH ideal but adaptable.
• How to plant: Dig hole twice the width of the root and same depth. Improve with well-rotted compost/manure if needed. Plant at same depth as previously grown, firm gently, water thoroughly. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Space 1–1.5 m apart (closer for dense winter display).
• Aftercare: Water regularly in first 1–2 years, especially dry spells. Leave unpruned the first year. Once established, hard-prune (coppice) stems to 5–10 cm in March for strongest red colour and compact growth; mulch and feed after pruning. Generally low-maintenance and pest-resistant.
