Pin Oak (quercus palustris)

• North American deciduous tree, introduced in 1800; fast-growing with elegant pyramidal to spreading crown (up to 20–25m tall).
• Outstanding autumn colour: deeply lobed glossy green leaves turn brilliant scarlet, crimson, or russet-red.
• Attractive pendulous lower branches and finely textured canopy; RHS Award of Garden Merit winner.
• Produces small acorns for wildlife (jays, squirrels); supports insects and birds.
• Tolerant of urban pollution, wet soils, and some exposure; ideal specimen for parks, avenues, or large gardens.
• Note: Prefers acidic conditions – prone to chlorosis (yellowing) on alkaline/chalky soils.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; deep, moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil (avoid lime/chalk); requires vast space – unsuitable for small gardens (mature spread 15–20m+).
• Preparation: Dig large hole twice root width; incorporate organic matter for moisture retention.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weeds and conserve soil moisture.
• Aftercare: Water regularly first few years in dry spells; minimal pruning; protect young trees from rabbits and deer.
