• Fast-growing evergreen conifer, reaching 30-40m tall with a pyramidal shape and attractive hanging cones.
• Traditional choice for Christmas trees due to its classic scent, dense foliage, and conical form.
• Valuable for timber production (strong, straight-grained softwood used in construction, furniture, and paper).
• Provides habitat and food for wildlife, including moths, beetles, and red squirrels (cones are a food source).
• Increasingly suitable for forestry in changing climates, with good drought tolerance compared to alternatives like Sitka spruce.
• Wind-resistant once established, suitable for windbreaks and shelterbelts.

Planting Guide

• Site selection: Choose a spacious location in full sun to partial shade; allow room for mature size (up to 40m tall and 10m wide crown). Not suitable for long term position in small gardens.
• Soil requirements: Prefers moist but well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5-7.0); tolerates loam, sand, clay, or poor soils but avoids waterlogged or very dry sites.
• Best planting time: Autumn to early spring; container-grown can be planted year-round if watered well.
• Planting steps:
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root spread and the same depth.
  • Plant at the original soil level (do not bury the trunk base).
  • Water thoroughly after planting and mulch around the base (e.g., bark) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first 1-2 years, especially during dry periods; established trees are low-maintenance and drought-tolerant. Minimal pruning needed (remove dead/damaged branches only).
