• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant to -20°C or lower; vigorous and adaptable to British conditions.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade for best growth and autumn colour; tolerates exposed or sheltered positions; good for urban sites due to pollution resistance.
• Soil: Prefers deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil; tolerates chalk, clay, loam, sand, and alkaline conditions; avoid waterlogged or very poor soils.
• Planting time: Bare-root November to March (dormant season); container-grown any time, ideally autumn or spring.
• Planting method: Dig a square hole twice as wide as the root spread; incorporate organic matter if the soil is poor; plant at the same depth as in the nursery (soil mark on stem); stake young trees if needed; mulch and water well.
• Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years, especially in dry periods; once established, tolerant of short droughts.
