Planting summary

• Position: Full sun or partial shade; tolerates exposed or sheltered sites (east-, south- or west-facing preferred).
• Soil: Any type (clay, loam, sand); moist but well-drained to well-drained; acid, neutral or alkaline. Prefers deep, moisture-retentive soil but adapts well.
• Size: 2.5–4 m height and spread (can be kept smaller by pruning/pollarding).
• When to plant: Best autumn to early spring (while dormant, ground not frozen); container-grown plants can be planted most of the year.
• How to plant: Dig in organic matter if needed for moisture retention. Plant at the same depth as in the nursery. Water thoroughly after planting. 
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first growing season, especially in dry spells. Once established it is fairly tolerant. Prune lightly after flowering or harder in late winter/early spring to shape or encourage new growth.
