Vigorous rambling/shrub rose with dense arching thorny stems. Produces abundant clusters of small, single, fragrant white flowers in early–mid summer, followed by masses of small bright red hips that provide excellent bird food.
Shade-tolerant (including north-facing walls), good for informal hedges, covering banks/slopes, scrambling into trees, or screening. Attracts pollinators; Hardy and adaptable.
Key planting points
- When: Bare-root ideally Nov–March.
- Site: Full sun to partial shade; any aspect (including north-facing); exposed or sheltered. Give plenty of space as it reaches 4–8 m high × 2.5–4 m spread (or train as climber/rambler).
- Soil: Tolerates chalk, clay, loam or sand; moist but well-drained preferred (avoids waterlogging). Any pH. Improve with well-rotted organic matter.
- How: Dig a generous hole, incorporate compost/manure. Plant at or just above soil level. Space ~45 cm apart for hedging, wider for specimens. Water well and mulch.
- Aftercare: Mulch and feed balanced fertiliser in late winter/early spring. Prune as rambler – after flowering if hips not wanted, or lightly in winter for hedges. Very vigorous.
