Vigorous, upright deciduous shrub prized for its masses of highly fragrant, double pure-white flowers in early summer (June–July), which release a strong orange-blossom scent. Attractive dark-green foliage, good for bees/pollinators, fully hardy, low-maintenance, and tolerant of most UK conditions including coastal sites and urban pollution. Ideal as a specimen, in mixed borders, or informal hedges.

Key planting & growing points

• Hardiness: Fully hardy to around –20°C). 
• Size: Typically 2.5–3 m (up to 4 m) tall × 1.5–2.5 m wide.
• Position: Full sun to partial shade (best flowering and scent in sun); suitable for exposed or sheltered sites.
• Soil: Any well-drained soil (chalk, clay, loam, sand); moist but well-drained preferred; tolerates a wide pH range. Avoid waterlogged ground.
• When to plant: Bare-root in the dormant season (November–March) when ground is not frozen or waterlogged. 
• How to plant: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root and the same depth. Improve soil with well-rotted compost/manure. Plant at the same depth as in the pot, firm in, water well, and mulch.
• Aftercare: Water regularly until established and in dry spells for the first couple of years. Mulch in spring. Once established, fairly drought-tolerant and low-maintenance.
• Pruning: Immediately after flowering (late summer). Cut back flowered shoots to strong buds/new growth and remove up to one-third of the oldest stems at the base to encourage vigorous new growth and better flowering next year. Never prune in winter/spring.
