Attractive medium-sized deciduous tree (typically 8–15 m tall) with a rounded crown. Produces abundant fragrant creamy-white flower panicles in late spring, deep green pinnate leaves, and good autumn colour (yellow/orange/red).

Tolerant of urban pollution, wind, coastal conditions and drier alkaline soils; suitable as a specimen, park or street tree. RHS Award of Garden Merit (2002). Generally low-maintenance and pest-free.

Key planting points

• Hardy in most of the UK.
• Position: Full sun (essential for best flowering); tolerates exposed or sheltered sites, including coastal.
• Soil: Prefers well-drained or moist but well-drained chalk, clay, loam or sand; alkaline to neutral pH. Avoid waterlogged ground.
• When to plant: Late autumn to early spring while dormant. 
• How to plant: Dig a hole 2–3× the width of the root; plant at the same depth as in the nursery. Backfill with existing soil (improve drainage in heavy clay if needed). Stake if exposed, water well and mulch. 
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first 1–2 years during dry spells. Once established it is relatively drought-tolerant. Minimal pruning– remove dead/damaged wood in late winter if required.

Excellent choice for woodland edges, coastal gardens or urban settings with alkaline/neutral soil and full sun.
