Laburnum (laburnum anagyroides)

• Small deciduous tree (up to 7–9m tall) with spectacular cascading chains of bright yellow, fragrant flowers in late spring/early summer – often called "golden rain" or "golden chain".
• Excellent ornamental specimen for gardens, trained over arches/pergolas, or as a focal point.
• Fast-growing, easy to maintain, and flowers reliably even when young.
• Attracts pollinators like bees when In Bloom.
• Note: All parts highly toxic if ingested (especially seeds), causing severe illness – unsuitable for gardens with young children or pets.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun (for best flowering) to partial shade; moist but well-drained, fertile soil (tolerates most types except waterlogged); sheltered from late frosts to protect buds; ample space – unsuitable for very small gardens unless heavily pruned.
• Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; incorporate well-rotted manure or compost.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk).
• Aftercare: Water well first few years in dry spells; minimal pruning (late summer to avoid bleeding sap, remove dead/crossing branches); low-maintenance once established.
