Compact, slow-growing conical evergreen with dark green needles (silvery-white beneath) and striking upright blue or purple cones that appear from a young age. Excellent ornamental specimen for smaller gardens, borders or mixed plantings; year-round interest and relatively low-maintenance.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun (tolerates light partial shade)
• Deep, moist but well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic soil
• Shelter from cold or drying winds for best shape and growth
• Fully hardy, prefers cooler conditions and dislikes prolonged drought, waterlogging or urban pollution
• Ultimate height typically 8–12 m with a spread of 4–8 m

When to plant 

• Bare-root in the dormant season (Nov-April)

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil
• Backfill with excavated soil (improve heavy soils with grit/compost if needed), firm gently and water thoroughly
• Mulch around the base (keep clear of the trunk) to retain moisture
• Allow space for mature size.

Aftercare 

• Water during dry spells, especially in the first few years
• No regular pruning required
• Generally trouble-free once settled, though may attract aphids or adelgids

Ideal for cool, moist UK gardens as a decorative focal point or Christmas-tree style specimen.
