Elegant medium-to-large deciduous tree with heart-shaped leaves that emerge bronze/purple, turn blue-green in summer, and deliver excellent yellow-orange-pink autumn colour.

Fallen leaves release a distinctive sweet burnt-sugar/candyfloss scent. RHS Award of Garden Merit; generally pest-free and low-maintenance once established. Suitable as a specimen or in woodland-style settings. 

Planting advice

• Plant while dormant, ideally November–March (avoid frozen or waterlogged ground).
• Choose a sheltered site in full sun or partial shade; protect from strong winds and late spring frosts (young growth can be damaged).
• Prefers moist but well-drained, fertile soil (loam, clay or sand); acid to neutral pH gives best autumn colour (tolerates mild lime). Avoid dry or waterlogged spots.
• Dig a hole as deep as the root mass and at least twice as wide.
• Place so the root collar sits at or just above soil level. Optional: mix in compost or well-rotted organic matter. 
• Backfill, firm gently, water thoroughly, and mulch (keep mulch away from the stem). Stake if needed for the first few years.
• Water regularly for the first 1–2 years during dry spells; keep a weed-free circle around the base.

Once established it is reasonably hardy and needs minimal pruning.
