• Striking small deciduous tree or large multi-stemmed shrub with rosy-pink/magenta pea-like flowers smothering bare branches in late spring (before leaves).
• Attractive heart-shaped leaves that turn butter-yellow in autumn, plus purple seed pods.
• Excellent for pollinators; nitrogen-fixing; drought-tolerant once established; architectural winter form. 
• Relatively compact and slow-growing (typically ~4–5 m after 20 years; ultimate height often 8–12 m), ideal for smaller gardens in milder/southern UK areas.

Planting Advice

• Timing: November–March while dormant. Avoid frozen or waterlogged soil. Plant promptly on arrival (or heel in temporarily). 
• Position: Full sun for best flowering (tolerates partial shade); sheltered spot preferred, especially in colder/northern areas; avoid frost pockets.
• Soil: Well-drained (any type – chalk, loam, sand, improved clay); neutral to alkaline preferred but adaptable. Does not like waterlogging.
• Method:
  • Dig a hole as deep as the roots and about twice as wide.
  • Spread roots gently; plant with the root collar (nursery soil mark) at ground level.
  • Backfill with original soil (light compost mix if desired); firm gently. 
  • Water thoroughly; stake if needed for support; protect from rabbits if required.
• Aftercare: Keep weed-free and water regularly in the first 1–2 growing seasons (especially dry spells). Mulch in spring. Minimal pruning needed once established (after flowering if required).

Choose the final position carefully – it dislikes being moved.
