Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade (sun for best autumn colour); deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil (tolerates chalk, clay, loam); sheltered from cold, drying winds; requires large space – unsuitable for small gardens (mature spread 10–20m+).
• Preparation: Dig large hole twice root width; incorporate organic matter in poor soils.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weed competition and conserve soil moisture.
• Aftercare: Water regularly first few years in dry spells; minimal pruning (remove dead/damaged in winter); generally pest-resistant but protect young plants from late spring frosts; low-maintenance once established.
