Italian Cypress (cupressus sempervirens 'Stricta')

Iconic narrow, pencil-like evergreen with dense dark-green scale foliage. Provides striking vertical structure and formal Mediterranean character. • Full sun
• Well-drained soil (chalk, clay, loam or sand; prefers neutral to slightly alkaline) – dislikes waterlogging
• Sheltered position protected from cold, drying winds (essential to maintain shape and prevent scorch)
• Tolerates most UK winters in sheltered sites, especially southern/central England, coastal and urban areas; more vulnerable in exposed northern or upland locations) 
• Tolerates dry conditions once established

When to plant

• Best in late winter to spring (after hard frosts) 

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and no deeper
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with or slightly above the surrounding soil (planting too deep risks stem rot)
• Backfill with existing soil (improve heavy clay with grit for drainage if needed); firm gently
• Water thoroughly and stake if necessary in windy spots
• Space to allow the tall, narrow form to develop (or closer for formal rows/avenues)

Aftercare

• Water regularly during dry spells for the first 1–2 years
• Once established, drought-tolerant and needs little water
• Minimal pruning required; lightly trim from an early age if shaping is desired (avoid cutting into old wood)
• Mulch to suppress weeds but keep clear of the trunk

Best suited to sheltered, sunny gardens with good drainage; less reliable in cold, exposed or high-rainfall sites.
