• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant to -20°C or lower; well-suited to British conditions, including exposed and coastal sites.
• Site: Full sun preferred for best growth; tolerates partial shade; fast-growing conical tree (up to 25m tall, 8m spread) ideal for windbreaks, screens, urban planting, or specimen in large spaces; pollution and wind resistant.
• Soil: Thrives in fertile, moist but well-drained soil; highly tolerant of poor, dry, compacted, chalky, or poorly drained conditions; suits acid to alkaline pH; nitrogen-fixing roots improve poor soils.
• Planting time: Bare-root November to March (dormant season); container-grown ideally autumn or spring.
• Planting method: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root spread; incorporate organic matter if soil is very poor; plant at the same depth (soil mark on stem); stake young trees; mulch base (avoid trunk contact) and water thoroughly.
• Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years, especially in dry periods; once established, highly tolerant of both drought and wet conditions.
