Hungarian Oak (quercus frainetto)

• Vigorous, fast-growing deciduous oak (up to 30–40m tall), often quicker to establish than native oaks on suitable sites.
• Striking bold, deeply lobed glossy green leaves (larger than English oak) turning rich yellow-brown in autumn.
• Impressive domed crown and attractive fissured bark; excellent specimen tree for parks, avenues, or large landscapes.
• Highly tolerant of dry, poor, or limestone/chalky soils; more drought-resistant than many oaks once established.
• Produces acorns for wildlife (jays, squirrels); supports insects and birds; long-lived and wind-firm.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun; deep, well-drained soil (prefers neutral to alkaline, excels on chalk/limestone but tolerates most except waterlogged); requires vast space – unsuitable for small gardens (mature spread 15–25m+).
• Preparation: Dig large hole twice root width; incorporate organic matter in very poor soils.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); stake young trees; firm in, water well, mulch base (keep clear of trunk) to reduce weed competition and conserve soil moisture.
• Aftercare: Water regularly first few years in dry spells; minimal pruning; protect young trees from rabbits and deer.
