• Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK, tolerant to -20°C or lower; well-suited to British climates, including exposed sites.
• Site: Full sun to partial shade; requires ample space as a large specimen tree (up to 25–35m tall and wide); only suitable for large gardens, parks, or open spaces; avoid planting near buildings or power lines.
• Soil: Prefers deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil; tolerates chalk, clay, loam, sand, and a range of pH (acidic to alkaline); avoids waterlogged or very poor conditions.
• Planting time: Bare-root November to March (dormant season); container-grown ideally autumn or spring.
• Planting method: Dig a wide hole (twice the root width); incorporate organic matter if soil is poor; plant at the same depth (soil mark on stem); stake young trees; mulch base and water thoroughly.
• Watering: Water regularly during the first 1–2 years, especially in dry periods; once established, moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from moist soil.
