Elegant, fast-growing deciduous tree with fine fern-like (pinnate/bipinnate) foliage that casts light dappled shade and turns golden yellow in autumn. Highly adaptable and pollution-tolerant (excellent for urban or industrial sites); drought-resistant once established; grows in a wide range of well-drained soils (sand, loam, clay, chalk) and pH levels. Hardy in the UK, architectural form.

Planting advice

• Timing: Plant while dormant, November–March; avoid frozen or waterlogged ground). 
• Site: Full sun; well-drained soil. Allow ample space (mature height often 20 m+, wide spread). Prefer sheltered from strong winds (branches can be brittle); young plants are more frost-sensitive.
• Preparation: On arrival, keep roots are moist Heel in temporarily if delayed. Dig a hole as deep as the root system and at least twice as wide; loosen the base. 
• Planting: Position so the root collar/nursery soil mark is at ground level (do not plant deeper). Spread roots naturally. Backfill with excavated soil (mix in compost if poor), firm gently, and water thoroughly. Stake if needed (especially larger specimens or exposed sites) and consider a rabbit guard. Apply mulch (5–8 cm), keeping it clear of the trunk.
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first 1–2 growing seasons (especially in dry spells). Keep the base weed-free. Protect young trees from late frosts or cold winds if in cooler/northern areas.

Once established it is low-maintenance and resilient.
