Planting & Growing in the UK

• Best suited to milder/southern and coastal areas; can suffer leaf loss or damage in severe winters or cold inland/frost-pocket sites. 
• Position: full sun or partial shade; exposed or sheltered.
• Soil: any well-drained type (chalk, clay, loam, sand; acid–alkaline); avoid waterlogging.
• Plant bare-root Nov–Mar or container-grown any time; dig a hole no deeper than the rootball but wider; plant level with soil surface; stake if exposed; water thoroughly.
• Aftercare: keep watered in dry spells for the first 1–2 years; mulch and keep weed-free around the base; minimal pruning (shape in summer if needed).
• Eventual size: typically over 12 m tall and 8 m+ wide (20–50 years to maturity).
