Grey Willow (salix cineria)

• Native deciduous shrub or small tree (up to 6–10m tall), highly adaptable and fast-growing; thrives in wet, boggy, or poorly drained soils where few trees succeed.
• Excellent for wildlife: early spring catkins provide vital nectar/pollen for bees and pollinators; leaves support numerous moth/butterfly caterpillars; dense growth offers nesting/cover for birds.
• Ideal for stabilising riverbanks, pondsides, or damp areas; effective windbreak or informal screening in wild gardens.
• Tolerates coastal exposure, pollution, and heavy clay; can be coppiced or pollarded for biomass or crafts.
• Silvery-grey leaves (especially undersides) and reddish stems add subtle ornamental interest; very hardy and low-maintenance.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; wet to moist soil (excels in boggy, flooded, or heavy clay sites but tolerates drier once established); ample space – branches drop  and root in soil creating wide spreading bushes; suitable for waterside or wild areas, avoid near buildings/drains.
• Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; little soil improvement needed as it thrives in poor/wet conditions.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk).
• Aftercare: Water well first year in unusually dry spells; minimal pruning (coppice in winter if desired); remove unwanted branches to control spread; highly vigorous.
