Compact deciduous shrub (1–1.5 m high and wide) with graceful arching branches. Masses of small pure-white flowers cover the bare stems in early spring (April–May), creating a bridal-wreath effect.
Attractive grey-green foliage follows; low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly (bees and other insects), generally pest- and disease-free, and fully hardy across the UK. Ideal for mixed borders, banks/slopes, informal hedges or cottage gardens. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Planting summary
- When: Bare-root November–March.
- Position: Full sun (best flowering) or partial shade; tolerates exposed or sheltered sites.
- Soil: Most moist but well-drained soils (chalk, loam, sand); any pH (acid to alkaline). Avoid waterlogging.
- Spacing: 1–1.5 m apart (or closer for informal hedges).
- How: Dig a hole as deep as the root and twice as wide. Loosen roots, plant at the same depth as in the nursery, backfill with soil (optionally mixed with compost), firm gently and water thoroughly. Mulch to retain moisture.
- Aftercare: Water regularly for the first 1–2 years, especially in dry spells. Once established it is quite drought-tolerant. Prune lightly after flowering; remove a few older stems at the base if needed to renovate.
