Fast-growing, tall evergreen conifer with a narrow conical habit, dark green needles (silvery beneath) and attractive upright cones. Highly productive on suitable sites with rapid volume growth; shade-tolerant (useful for underplanting or continuous cover systems); striking architectural specimen for large gardens or parks.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun to partial shade
• Moist but well-drained, deep mineral soils of poor to medium fertility; acid to neutral pH
• Prefers higher rainfall (>1,000 mm) but tolerates drier areas with adequate soil moisture
• Sheltered sites – sensitive to exposure, late spring frosts and pollution
• Fully hardy, does not tolerate waterlogged, peaty or strongly calcareous soils

When to plant

• Bare-root: dormant season (typically November–April), avoiding frozen or waterlogged ground

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the root collar is level with the surrounding soil; firm gently and water thoroughly
• Mulch around the base (keep clear of the trunk)
• Allow generous space – mature trees can exceed 40–50 m in height with a wide spread

Aftercare

• Water during dry spells until established (can take several years)
• Protect from late frosts and exposure when young
• Minimal pruning required
• Suitable for pure stands on sheltered sites or mixtures (may dominate partners due to rapid growth)

Best suited to sheltered, moist, well-drained sites in larger woodland, parks or commercial plantings rather than small or exposed gardens.
