• Striking bright greenish-yellow stems that provide excellent winter colour (especially vivid in full sun).
• Attractive green summer foliage turning red/orange in autumn, plus small white flowers and white berries.
• Fully hardy throughout the UK, easy to grow, and tolerant of a wide range of conditions including damp or poorly drained soils.
• Good for wildlife (bees and birds) and ideal for mixed borders, waterside plantings, or grouping with red-stemmed dogwoods for contrast.

Planting & care

• Position: Full sun (best stem colour) to partial shade.
• Soil: Most soils (chalk, clay, loam, sand); prefers moist but well-drained; tolerates wet/boggy ground. Any pH.
• Planting time: Bare-root November–March. 
• Spacing: 1–2 m apart (closer, 50–90 cm, for dense winter displays).
• Size: Typically 1.5–2.5 m high × 2.5–4 m spread if unpruned (can be kept smaller).
• Pruning: Leave unpruned the first year. From year 2, coppice hard (to 5–15 cm above ground) in late winter/early spring (Feb–March) for brightest young stems. Alternatively remove a third of oldest stems annually.
• Aftercare: Water well while establishing; mulch to retain moisture; generally low-maintenance once settled.

Suckering habit can form thickets—remove unwanted suckers if needed.
