A large, bushy deciduous shrub with bright golden-yellow pinnate leaves, creamy-white scented flower heads in early summer, and purple-black berries.

It is fully hardy in the, fast-growing, low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly (attracts insects and birds), and useful for hedges, screens, borders or coastal sites. Flowers and cooked berries are edible (e.g. cordial or wine). Hard pruning encourages the brightest foliage.

Planting summary

• When: Bare-root ideally November–March.
• Where: Full sun for strongest leaf colour (partial shade tolerated, but colour may fade). Any aspect; exposed or sheltered.
• Soil: Tolerates most types (chalk, clay, loam, sand); prefers moist but well-drained, moderately fertile soil. Avoid prolonged waterlogging.
• How: Dig a hole twice the width of the root. Plant at the same depth as in the nursery (soil mark on stem). Backfill, firm, water thoroughly and mulch. Space 2.5–4 m apart for specimens or closer for hedging. 
• Aftercare: Water regularly in the first year during dry spells. Once established it is relatively drought-tolerant. Optional light feed in spring. Prune hard in late winter/early spring for compact shape and best foliage (or coppice every few years).
