Fast-growing evergreen conifer with striking golden-yellow foliage (brighter in full sun; may bronze slightly in winter). Excellent for dense, year-round hedges, privacy screens or windbreaks. Hardy, adaptable and creates effective barriers quickly; a colourful alternative to green Leylandii.

Key growing conditions

• Full sun to partial shade (best golden colour in full sun)
• Well-drained soil of almost any type (chalk, clay, loam or sand; acid to alkaline) – avoid permanently waterlogged ground
• Tolerates exposed and coastal sites
• Fully hardy down to approx. –20 °C)
• Vigorous growth of 40–80 cm per year; can exceed 12–25 m if untrimmed

• Container-grown plants can be planted year-round with care

How to plant

• Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and of equal depth
• Position so the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface
• Backfill, firm gently and water thoroughly
• For hedging: plant 60–90 cm apart in a single row (closer for faster screening)
• Mulch around the base and keep watered during the first year

Aftercare

• Water regularly until established
• Trim 2–3 times during the growing season (April–August); never cut into old, bare wood as it will not resprout
• Keep the hedge slightly wider at the base for light penetration
• Once established, relatively low-maintenance but requires consistent pruning to control size

Ideal for quick, colourful evergreen screening, but regular trimming is essential to prevent it becoming overly large or a nuisance.
