Goat Willow (salix caprea)

• Native deciduous tree/shrub (up to 8–12m tall), very hardy and fast-growing; thrives in damp or wet soils.
• One of the earliest and best sources of spring nectar and pollen – fluffy “pussy willow” catkins in late winter/early spring are vital for bees, bumblebees and other pollinators.
• Excellent for wildlife gardens: leaves support numerous moth and butterfly caterpillars; provides nesting cover for birds.
• Tolerates exposed, coastal, or poor sites; ideal for wet areas, pond edges, or naturalising in wildlife schemes.
• Attractive silvery catkins, broad green leaves turning yellow in autumn; can be coppiced or pollarded for repeated catkin display.

Planting Guide

• Best time: Bare-root November–March (dormant season); container-grown autumn or spring.
• Location: Full sun to partial shade; moist to wet soil (excels in damp/clay sites, tolerates most except very dry); ample space – avoid near buildings/drains due to vigorous roots; suitable for exposed or coastal areas.
• Preparation: Dig hole twice root width; add organic matter to poor soils.
• Planting: Set at original depth (check trunk soil mark); firm in, water deeply, mulch base (keep clear of trunk); stake if needed in windy spots.
• Aftercare: Water well first few years in dry spells; prune/coppice hard every few years for better catkins (late winter); minimal care required; protect young plants from rabbits and deer.
