Fuzzy Deutzia (deutzia scabra)

Deciduous, medium-to-large hardy shrub (typically 2.5–3.5 m high × 1.5–2.5 m spread,). Produces abundant star-shaped white (sometimes pink-tinged), often honey-scented flowers in late spring/early summer. Fuzzy/rough green leaves; peeling bark adds winter interest. Attracts bees/pollinators; low-maintenance, generally pest- and disease-resistant; good for borders, informal hedges, or as a specimen in cottage/informal gardens. Tolerates a wide range of soils and conditions. 

Planting advice

• When: Late autumn to early spring (dormant season), while ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
• Position: Full sun to partial shade; prefer some shelter from strong winds and late spring frosts (which can damage flower buds). Avoid very exposed or permanently waterlogged sites.
• Soil: Moist but free-draining, fertile soil preferred; grows in chalk, clay, loam or sand (acid–alkaline). Improve poor soil with well-rotted compost or manure.
• How to plant:
  
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably and deep enough so the nursery soil mark on the stem sits at ground level.
  • Spread roots out, backfill, firm gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly.
  • Apply a mulch (keeping it clear of the stem) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
• Aftercare: Water in dry spells until established. Minimal ongoing care needed once settled.
